The Times: Vuchy was near the coup after the defeat

Serbian authoritarian leader Aleksandar Vuciq was close to organising a violent coup to stay in power before withdrawing suddenly Sunday, according to politicians and a former police official who talked about The Times.

Evidence suggests Vuciq was determined to stay in power after 12 years in office, but withdrew when it became clear that the Student List had won a majority of 500,000 votes in the general elections, and after receiving calls calling not to continue facing.

He sent 4,000 police and 3,000 hooligans to downtown Belgrade on Sunday to protect the regime, I am 100 per cent sure he was planning not to accept the result, Spasoje Vuleviq, former head of Serbia’s antiterrorism police unit, said.
