Local elections in Albania on May 9, 2027

Albania’s president, Bajram Begaj, has decreed on May 9th 2027 for holding elections for local government bodies.

In an official report, the presidency suggests the decision was made following consultations with representatives of political forces represented in the Assembly and State Election Commissioner.

The call for consultation was answered by the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, the Social Democrat Party and the State Election Commissioner, while other political subjects did not participate.

According to the presidency, the State Election Commissioner suggested the 9 May, arguing that it offers more time to prepare the implementation measures. The same date was preferred by the Social Democrat Party.

The announcement stresses that the selected date is not linked to any reserve or prejudice for favouring certain parties or for influence in the free will of the voters.

The president has called on political subjects to participate in elections with alternatives, platforms and candidates, as well as to ensure a fair, competitive process and in line with democratic standards. He has also called for full co-operation with the Central Election Commission for the management of the process.
