Spectacular figure after four years of war, Ukraine shows how many troops Russia has lost

Russia has lost 1,588,180 troops in Ukraine since the launch of the full-scale invasion on February 24th 2022, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces stated.

According to the report, in the last 24 hours alone, Russian forces have suffered 1,670 losses. Russia has also lost 12,450 tanks, 25,620 armoured aircraft, 168,480 vehicles and fuel tanks, 51,739 artillery systems, 2,247 multiple missile systems, 1,730 air defence systems, 452 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 3,045 land vehicles without a pilot, 35 ships and navigation vehicles, as well as two submarines.

The Ukrainian General Staff did not publish the numbers of their losses, referring to the operational secret. However, reports of Western independent institutions estimate that Russian losses are conspicuously higher than Ukrainian ones.

According to a January 2026 report by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies ( CSIS, Ukraine may have suffered 500,000 to 600,000 losses from February 2022 to December 2025, where 100,000 to 140,000 are thought to be killed in combat.

Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky told France TV that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the war, while a considerable number result in extinction.

The intensity of fears and fighting has made Ukraine extremely difficult to recover the bodies of fallen soldiers needed to confirm identity through DNA tests.
