FIFA’s current president, Gianni Infantino, could face a serious rival in the race for re-election at the helm of the world’s top football institution.
The member of the FIFA Council, Japanese Kozo Tashima, who has co-operated with Infantino for nearly 11 years, is planning to run for the president’s post, Japanese media have reported.
The current is considered the first serious candidate to face Infantino, while the deadline for the surrender of the candidacy is 18 November.
The former president of the Japanese Football Federation has received the full support of this institution for its candidacy.
Meanwhile, FIFA is facing criticism over some recent developments, including the failure of Infantino’s plan to sell shares to private investors.
Commenting on the possibility of a race without counterconventions, Tashhima has criticised such a scenario.
The worst thing that can happen is for Infantino to be re-elected to post without a choice at all, he has declared.
