Pope Leo has announced that he has decided to vote through mail in the Muslim elections in the United States in what is considered a historic case for a leader of the Catholic Church.
The first US-born pope said Friday he is proud to be an American citizen and that he wants to fulfill his civic obligation.
I’m proud to be American and exercise this right, Leo told a reporter aboard the plane that was transporting him from Rome to Uruguay, where he is launching a 12-day visit to South America.
Leo, born in Chicago named Robert Prevost, is believed to be the first pope to vote in a secular election while holding the post.
His ancestors, including Pope Francis, who was originally from Argentina, had chosen not to participate in such election processes.
Local officials in Will County, south of Chicago, had confirmed last week that the Pope had requested a ballot through mail for the mesmandat elections.
Meanwhile, the Vatican, on October 30th, had indicated that the Pope believes in the right and obligation of citizens to participate in democratic processes.
