Marta Kos: European Union is dialogue with Kosovo Government on changes to Special Law

European Union Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has warned that proposed amendments to the Kosovo Specialised Chambers Law could jeopardise the country’s progress in the European reform process.

She announced that the European Commission is already in dialogue with the Government of Kosovo regarding these amendments, while expressing hope that the new institutions will enable the country to advance.

Now with the new government, I hope the state has a chance to move forward. Amendments to the Special Law risk undermining any progress, but are already in dialogue with the Government of Kosovo, she has said.

Speaking about Kosovo’s path towards European integration, Kos has stressed that the next step is to achieve reconciliation among the 27 EU member states so that they can ask the European Commission to prepare the opinion for Kosovo’s application for membership.

She has reiterated that the European Union is willing to take this step, but has stressed that to ensure the support of member states, Kosovo must preserve institutional stability and mark concrete results in reforms.

We’re willing to do this. But to convince member states, Kosovo needs stable institutions, as it does now, and progress in reforms, and the stronger progress in reform will be the case of Kosovo to move ahead, she has said.
