Democratic League of Kosovo MP ( The LDK), Albena Resiti, has spoken at today’s Assembly session of the murder of Arlinda Zekaj, raising concerns about the response of institutions to cases of violence against women.
Resitij has said publishing audio-incisions in which Arlinda is heard calling for help from police officials makes the case even more serious. According to her, an official is heard in one of the recordings saying that he is not obliged to handle it.
Arlinda’s murder has shocked us, but what we’re hearing these days makes it even more serious, even sad, has declared Rishaj.
She also mentioned reports that, three days before the assassination, when Arlinda had requested police assistance, officials had been delayed 70 minutes because they had not had an official car available.
I ask today what security a woman who needs help from the state can feel, if the answer she gets is that nobody is obliged to deal with it, the LDK MP has said.
It has also raised concerns about the number of murders in recent months and the ability of institutions to protect citizens when they most need.
We have eight murders in the last 10 months alone. Are our institutions getting to protect citizens when they most need them?
The MP has also criticised the lack of clear answers to institutional responsibility in previous cases, questioning the implementation of new measures the government has warned of women’s protection.
It has stressed that citizens’ trust in these measures also depends on how previous cases are handled and whether institutional responsibilities are addressed clearly. /Telegraphy/
