Zelensky arrives in Madrid, meeting with UN, EU leaders

Ukraine’s president, Voldymyr Zelensky, has arrived in Madrid on Wednesday, on a surprise visit involving a series of high-level meetings with international leaders, under the Ibero-American Summit.

His visit was kept secret for security reasons until the moment the presidential plane landed in the Spanish capital. During the two-day stay, Zelensky is expected to hold meetings with some of the leaders who have gathered in Madrid for the summit.

On Thursday, the Ukrainian president will participate in a meeting with top international representatives, where UN Secretary General António Guterres and European Council President António Costa are expected to attend, reports Euronews.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, along with other Ibero-American representatives, is also expected to attend the meeting.

In addition to the joint meeting, Zelensky will hold bilateral talks with Sánchez and Spain’s King Felipe VI.

The summit in Madrid is also seen as an opportunity for Ukraine to strengthen relations with Latin American countries, a region where war launched after the Russian invasion of Ukraine has fostered different attitudes.

According to government sources, Zelensky also plans to meet with representatives of some of the 22 Ibero-American delegations in the Spanish capital.
