Serbia with new faces but with old claims: potentially candidate for prime minister does not change Belgrade’s position on Kosovo

Dejan Shoskiq, university professor and former governor of the National Bank of Serbia, mentioned as the possible candidate for prime minister from the Student List, has declared that Kosovo is part of Serbia.

In an interview for Croatian mediaIndexRhekkiq has said that the Student List, which aims to take power after victory in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, will be based on Serbia’s Constitution and its interpretation of UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

The constitution says that Kosovo and Metohia is an autonomous province within Serbia. On the other hand, the main international legal framework documents, such as UN Security Council Resolution 1244, say the same thing, Shoschkiq has declared.

Thus, even though the Student List is presented as a new political alternative in Serbia, the person’s statements mentioned for the future leadership of the Government show continuity on one of the region’s most sensitive issues: not recognising Kosovo’s independence and Serbia’s claim on its territory.

This stance coincides with the Serbian state approach to Kosovo, which relies on the claim that Kosovo is part of Serbia.

Promising EU approach, but no change for Kosovo

Shoskiq has said the Student List is aimed at respecting the local and international judicial framework, as well as supporting democracy, human rights and civic freedoms.

He has estimated that Serbia could meet more easily and faster the criteria for membership in the European Union, but has not warned a change of attitude towards Kosovo.

According to him, the final decision on Serbia’s EU membership will depend on meeting the required conditions, the European Union’s readiness to accept Serbia, and the decision of Serbian citizens in the referendum.

However, his statements raise questions about how far the political change that the Student List promises can go, if in the Kosovo issue it continues to hold the same position as power intended to replace it.

We will not agree on the wars of the 1990s

In the interview, Shoskiq has also talked about Serbia’s relations with Croatia, saying that the two countries would not easily agree on interpretation of the events of the wars of the 1990s.

Asked about Vukovar and Operation KHSuhia, he has said differences will continue due to different sodiums over what happened during the wars.

There won’t be much reconciliation in the future for the general perception of what happened during the 1990s, because there are different Narrativas, respectively, different visions of events, he has declared.

Shoskiq has added that the Student List aims at good neighbourly relations, regional co-operation and stability, saying Serbia should develop reports with neighbouring countries.

Serbia’s former president, Aleksandar Vuciq, had mentioned Shoskicin in early October as the possible candidate for prime minister in the event of the Student List’s victory.

However, in the interview for naughtex, Shoskiq has not confirmed the ambitions for the post, saying he is one of 250 parliamentary candidates on the list.

He has indicated that the future composition of the Government of Serbia will be discussed in the next phase of the process within the student organisation, possibly with the participation of elected deputies.
