For more than six decades, the United States of America has followed a strict policy of silence regarding Israel’s nuclear arsenal, carefully avoiding any public confirmation that their main ally in the Middle East possesses such weapons.
However, this approach of decades is increasingly being questioned, while the Iran war has turned alarmingly to the risk of spreading weapons of mass destruction in the region.
Israel has never officially accepted or officially denied the possession of nuclear weapons a strategy known as nuclear falsehood, which has enabled them to maintain that potential without suffering international pressure and sanctions. International estimates, however, suggest that Israel may have about 90 nuclear heads, based the mainly complex in Dimona, in the desert of Negev.
This traditional silence of Washington crashed directly into the U.S. Congress during a hearing session. Lawmaker Joachim Castro directly asked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio if Israel owns nuclear weapons.
Rubio avoided official confirmation, but acknowledged that according to global estimates Israel owns them, adding that the Israeli state itself has never publicly stated that fact.
On the other hand, Castro warned that maintaining this policy is becoming increasingly dangerous in conditions of conflict with Iran, as public opinion and international factors do not know Israel’s red lines for their possible use.
The situation is further complicated with fears that other countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia, could enter the nuclear race if Iran manages to obtain such weapons. It now remains a question of whether the US will manage to preserve this 60-year-old taboo or be forced to change its position in the face of the crisis in the Middle East.
