United Kingdom Ambassador to Kosovo Jonathan Hargrees has demanded that the state strategy for the appeals phase in Kosovo’s Specialised Chambers serves the country’s best interests, simultaneously respecting international pledges and rule of law.
He has expressed that stance during his meeting with Kosovo Parliament Speaker Albulen Haxhiu, with whom he has also discussed legislative work that awaits the European Parliament and the agenda of reforms.
Hargreaves has indicated that part of the discussion has been dedicated to the state’s strategy for the appeals process following the act of first instance of Specialised Chambers.
We also discussed the state strategy for the appeals process following the Kosovo Specialised Chambers Act and the importance of it serving Kosovo’s best interests, while simultaneously respecting international pledges and rule of law, he has written.
Otherwise, former President Hashim Thaci, former head of the Kosovo Assembly Kadri Veselin and other former KLA leaders, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, were transferred to the detention facility of Kosovo’s Specialised Chambers in The Hague on 4 November and 5 November 2020. All four, in their appearance before the court, have pleaded innocent to all points of the indictment.
Judgment against them in the Specialised Chambers began on April 3, 2023, and on September 16 of this year the act of first degree was declared.
Thaci and Krasniqi were sentenced to 25 years in prison, Kadri Weselini to 18 years, while Rexhep Selimi was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
All four were convicted of charges related to illegal or arbitrary detention, cruel treatment, torture and murder, while being acquitted of charges of crimes against humanity.
