The consultations process comes under the procedure for setting the election date, which is expected to take place in the period of April 15th, 2027. After meetings with representatives of political forces, the head of state is expected to announce the official date of elections within November 9th.
The Socialist Party has earlier confirmed participation in consultations called by the president. The head of the SP Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, has stated that consultation with political parties for the appointment of the election date is a procedure followed by every president of the Republic. He also criticised the Democratic Party’s decision not to participate in the process, underlining that local elections are expected to be held between April 15th and May 15th of 2017.
On the other hand, the Democratic Party has rejected President Begaj’s invitation. The head of the DP Parliamentary Group, Gazment White, has described the process as a political strategy, claiming that the date of the elections is set in advance by Prime Minister Edi Rama and that consultations have no real political value. In his reaction, White said that the president’s invitation is totally negligible, while accusing the head of state of not exercising his constitutional role, but, according to him, is serving power.
