JD Vance sends letter to Tehran, US aimed at restarting negotiations with Iran

US Vice President JD Vance has sent a letter to Mohsen Rezae, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, in an effort to resume suspended peace talks between Washington and Tehran.

According to an exclusive report of The Wall Street Journal, who quotes American officials and persons familiar with the issue, the initiative was undertaken with the directive of President Donald Trump, who was aware of this communication.

Through this contact, Vance aims to assess whether there is a common ground between the two countries that can pave the way for an agreement and convince Trump to give up plans for a short but intensive military campaign against Iran in the weeks following the US middle elections, held on 3 November.

According to the report, contacts between American and Iranian officials have focused mainly on creating a framework for negotiations, rather than discussing concrete details of a peace proposal.
