Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised US businessman Elon Mousk, naming him a true agent, while finding Moscow keeping in touch with him at the time when Russia is developing its network of satellite communication for military use in the fight against Ukraine.
Speaking at a summit with African leaders in Moscow, Putin compared the Starlink network, established by Musk’s SpaceX company, to Russia’s efforts to develop its satellite system, called Rassvet.
Erlon Musk is a genius, a real genius, Putin said, according to the Russian news agency TASS. How many satellites does he have in orbit? More than 5,000, while we are still making our first steps, he added.
SpaceX active satellites are estimated to be about 10,000. They provide high-speed internet services via the Starlink network.
Putin also spoke of contacts between the Russian side and the American businessman, stressing the importance of co-ordinating satellite networks.
We are in close contact with our American partners, including Mr. Musk, because it is very important not to create obstacles for each other in orbit and maintain a certain level of discipline and order, he said.
In early October, restrictions on the functioning of Starshill, the Starlink military version, caused controversy over the use of the network from Ukraine.
Limitations were suddenly implemented during a night in the middle of the month, preventing Ukraine from carrying out medium-ray action attacks and making it difficult to use several air defence systems against aircraft.
Elon Musk initially denied he had ordered internet restrictions. However, late last week, he claimed he had closed a legal vacuum allowing military use of the Starlink network.
Starlink does not operate in Russia, while early this year it was banned from use by Russian forces in Ukraine.
