The 19th protest in Tirana, organised by the opposition and supported by a group of students, has been accompanied by tensions and clashes with the State Police, lasting about eight hours.
Protest began at two different locations. Students gathered in front of the Ministry of Education, while supporters of the opposition Democratic Party, led by MPs, marched towards the prime minister.
Initially, democratic protesters stayed about 30 minutes before the prime minister’s building, before joining students at the Ministry of Education. During this march there were verbal tensions, while among the protesters were also heard calls against Prime Minister Edi Rama and DP chairman Sali Berisha.
The situation escalated in front of the Ministry of Education, where part of the protesters threw solid items towards the police. For several hours, State Police called on protesters to stop violent acts, while at one point they used the Autobot with water to disperse the crowd.
At around 3:20 a.m., tensions were compounded by the dropping of lighting tools toward police forces. After several hours of confrontation, protesters left the Ministry of Education and marched toward the prime minister.
Even before the government building, the situation again tenseed. Police intervened with water Autobots and called on protesters to stop violent actions and leave the prime minister’s perimeter.
Later, the protest moved to the streets of Tirana, where police began escorting protesters. According to Top Channel reports, three people were arrested during police interventions.
After distribution for several minutes, protesters returned to the prime minister, continuing to rally with political calls, while police used spray and pepper.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted through a post on social networks, where he published photos from the protest and inaugurated the repeat opposition protests.
