US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Brazilian Senator Flavius Bolsonaro, who fled to the United States after his defeat in the presidential election by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, could stay in the country as long as he wishes.
Speaking to reporters at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump said he had not planned to meet with Senator Bolsonaro.
Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at a press conference in the G20 summit margins in Atlanta that Washington had no direct involvement in Bolsonaro’s flight from Brazil.
The Brazilian senator said Friday that he and his family had left Brazil to avoid prosecution. In a video that divided into Instagram, he said that on Monday, after visiting his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest, police informed him that his passports were being confiscated as part of a money laundering investigation.
I left for Brazil’s benefit, Flavius Bolsonaro said, who refused his defeat by centre-left President Lula in the second round of elections. He spoke of electoral fraud, despite denials both by his party and by the judiciary. He predicted that Brazil would submit under Lula and declared itself ready to run for president again. I’m not talking about 2030, but earlier, he said.
