Ukraine’s president, Voldymyr Zelensky, has voiced hope that the democrats’ victory in the Muslim elections in the United States will bring increased US support to Kiev in the fight against Russia.
In an interview for German television ZDF, Zelensky has said he expects political changes that could follow in taking over two Chambers of Congress from the Democrats next year to positively influence support for Ukraine.
I am also grateful to the republics, but the Democrats speak very clearly about supporting and providing assistance to Ukraine, Zelensky has declared, according to comments published in German by ZDF prior to full transmission of the interview.
They talk about restoring ties between the United States and Europe… So there is hope that a balance of forces will be established and that we will get more support, he added.
The head of the Ukrainian state has estimated that increased American aid, whether financial or military, could directly affect the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
If Congress now speaks of strong financial support or military assistance, as Europe is doing and witnessing today, then it would be positive to influence Putin, ZDF quoted Zelensky as saying.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president has made constant efforts to improve relations with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, who are tense in some cases. One of the most difficult moments was the meeting at the Oval Office in February 2025, when Zelensky faced charges of being ungrateful for the help offered by the US.
Last week, Trump has taken several steps that have favoured Russia’s interests, including an agreement on importing Russian oil and facilitating sanctions.
Despite these developments, diplomatic efforts to end the war are continuing. The tripartite talks led by the US, with the participation of Ukraine and Russia, are expected to resume next week, following a several-month break.
The US president’s special envoy, Steve Whitoff, has announced on Monday that the delegations of Ukraine and Russia will gather in Abu Dhabi on November 10th and 11th, with the aim of discussing the end of the war, security agreements for the post-war period and lowering tensions.
